Davie (as he is affectionately known around the Firehouse) started with Volunteer Hose Co. 2 in 1968, faithfully serving through the ranks. Over the years, he served in every line officer position, from Second Lieutenant to Chief, including serving as Chief of the Department from 1986 to 1988.
The name Barbera is synonymous with Vol. Hose, as no fewer than nine Barberas have been members of the company. Dave’s brother Michael (affectionately known as Chief Mike) served two terms as Chief of the WHFD at Vol. Hose, and his brothers Nicky, Gus, and Joey are all exempt Vol. Hose members.
Their father also helped with social events and cooking, always supporting the department.
For over 50 years, Dave has remained a staple in this company — a leader, and someone from whom we all learned how to be better firefighters, officers, and leaders.
More than 50 years later, Davie still comes down to share his experience, knowledge, and guidance with our newer members today.
"Joining Volunteer Hose was the best thing I ever did."— Dave Barbera
