Firefighter Spotlight of the Month -June: Bernard Ellis

Bernard Ellis joined Volunteer Hose Co. 2 in 1975. He was recently recognized by our company and our Village and Town boards, for his 50 years of dedicated service to the WHFD.

Bernard is the senior most driver of our apparatus, and even after serving here for 50 years, he still comes out at 3am for fire calls. He remains one of our top responders, and our members count on his years of driving experience to get them to and from fire calls safely.

He continues to dedicate his time to Volunteer Hose in the capacity of Membership Committee Chairman and as the Chairman of our Executive Committee. Bernie is a past member of our House Committee and helps out tirelessly during all events at Volunteer Hose.

Over the years, Bernard has also served as Custodian, House Committee member, Vice President, Assistant Engineer, and is currently serving as Chairman of the Executive Board.

Bernie’s daughter, Amber Ellis, followed him into the fire service, and on occasion, the two of them can be seen responding to fire calls together throughout the Village of West Haverstraw on one of our blue fire trucks.
